The cross country season is one of the longer ones out of the other sports. We start work in June building our base mileage. We continue consistent running, workouts, and routines all the way through the fall. It all comes to a head at Regionals in Allendale. The stakes feel higher while the pressure is on us to run our fastest time or hit a place we are aiming for! Regardless of outcome, however, this team has shown resilience and both coaches are proud of what we have done this season!  Congratulations to our two state qualifiers, Lily Lesarge who was 8th place in the region (20:24) and Lainey Roth who was 15th (20:32)! They both have worked as a “dynamic duo” all season. Lainey worked all summer, and set out the goal of getting to state! Lily used that soccer mentality she has and stayed in the top ten for the race! Nice work girls! Senior, Nathalie Strockis, did not run her fastest race, but she is one of our four-year runners that has brought commitment, a good attitude, and determination to this sport and team! She can be proud of not only her running accomplishments, which included a state qualification, but leaving a positive impact on her teammates and coaches!  Freshman, Katherine Klooster, had an awesome freshman season, and had an awesome PR (22:39) to cap it off! Future is bright with her!   Our multiple sport athletes Abby Druelle (22:50), Claire Smith (23:43) and Paige Clinger (22:57) fought hard in their races. It is not easy to go through the grind of a cross country season and when you add another sport to the mix, it can be easy to wanna relax at one of them. These girls all maintained varsity spots and although not the races they were hoping for, did so much all season to be proud of! Going from a meet to a game on the same day is done by the smallest number of people! They can be proud of that alone! But we are proud of the improvements and strides they made for this team!   Also the lone girl in the PROM race was Audrey Mckeiver! She waited all day to race, choosing to want to try and get a solid last race under her belt!  She ran a (23:28) only a little under 10 seconds away from a PR! Way to go Audrey!   Although we were fifth place and did not qualify as a team, the rest of the varsity showed a true fight in this race! Their emotions after show how much they care for their teammates and wanted it more than anything! It emphasizes this sport is not for the wary, you get one time to do it, there’s no timeouts, no halftime, and no room for error! We had a great season from this group with a lot of top finishes, big PRs and accomplishments to be proud of! Coaches couldn’t be more happy with the results we had!    We also wanna recognize our seniors Lainey, Maggie, and Nathalie who put in four years and did it with a positive attitude and love for running! They all trained during summers, put in hours of workouts, while creating high goals for themselves and their team. Their presence next season will surely be missed because of that, but we know they left that impact on their teammates to continue on! Our fourth senior, Ally, our pole vault champ, just joined this year and left an impact with not just her athletic abilities but her commitment to the team and the smile she brought everyday! We were so glad to have her and she has a bright future because of it all!    Next up is the State Meet November 5th to cheer on our girls!!

Girls Varsity Cross Country- Final Conference at Hamilton

West Catholic cross country competed for their final conference race at Diamond Springs Golf Course on Wednesday. Lily Lesarge was 11th in the race and hit a (20:27) PR! She earned All Conference honors with her points getting her 7th in the conference! Lainey Roth also ran a PR race (20:32) and was 14th for the day! She fought all season to stay in those top packs and ended up top 20 in the region! Congrats girls! We also had solid races from the varsity. Nathalie Strockis (22:00) 30th place, Paige Clinger (22:35) PR, Katherine Klooster (23:04), Abby Druelle (23:07), Claire Smith (23:34), Liz Richmond (24:38), and Brenna Olewinski (24:11)! The JV team had solid showings too. Audrey Mckeiver led the way for JV (24:15), followed by Maggie Mckeiver (24:31), Ally Olszewski (25:48), Amelia Snelling (25:49) PR, and Nemina Hegemann (29:10) PR! Nice work Varsity and JV!   As our team likes to say “the hay is in the barn.” We have had many weeks of training, growing in the sport and as a team in the process. A lot of us have made significant improvement and ran through some tough conditions and scenarios. We can compete well even with teams with larger rosters than us. We have one more race to do that. That is Regionals at Allendale, October 29th. If everything goes to plan, we should have some individuals qualify for the state meet. But as Coach Duba said to the team, we don’t need to all have A+ plus races. If we just have “very good” or even faster than we normally do, we have a chance of qualifying. It is very much possible with the PR friendly course and the goals we set out for ourselves at the beginning of the season! One more week to zone in for it!

The Portage Invitational feels like a spectacle more than any other of our races. With good competition and the large number at the starting line, we tend to run a solid race!   Lainey Roth, Brenna Olewinski, Liz Richmond, and Amelia Snelling (in her first race!) all earned medals!  Lainey Roth (20:49), Katherine Klooster (23:02), Audrey Mckeiver (23:20) Liz Richmond (24:18), and Brenna Olewinski (24:13) all ran their personal bests! Nathalie Strockis ran a season best with a 21:44! Paige Clinger and Bree Hoffer ran solid races by keeping their teammates on their sights!   Our seniors of Maggie, Lainey and Nathalie will look forward to their last two races as an opportunity to finish their four year cross on a solid note! Also help their teammates be right there with them! Hopefully it can mean another race on November 5th!   Next up is the last conference race at Hamilton. Unfamiliar course, but we’ll be ready!
Girls Varsity and JV Cross Country-Cougar Falcon Invitational

Sometimes we have days where the right breakfast was eaten, shoes were tied right, and our breathing was on point! Seemed to be the case for the Cougar-Falcon Invitational at Gainey Field. A meet that has had extreme weather through the years, either raining all day or progressively hot. We took advantage of the plenty of competition and cooler temperatures to have great times all across the board. It is almost hard to go into each individual’s race performance for how well we did! So for the girls, we’ll just list off the personal records  and season records! Varsity Lily Lesarge- 20:33-PR Lainey Roth-21:07-PR  Nathalie Strockis-22:23-SR Abby Druelle- 23:03-SR Audrey McKeiver-23:31-SR Bree Hoffer-23:58-PR Paige Clinger-23:59-PR   JV Brenna Olewinski-24:13-PR Amelia Adkins-24:29-PR Ally Olszewski-25:05-PR   Who also raced close season bests were Claire Smith 23:27, merely a second off it,  and Liz Richmond, only four seconds off it! And one of our captains, Maggie McKeiver, still racing through an injury, hit a season record of 25:22, and we just have to commend her tenacity and effort through it. She has been doing everything right at practice to get back to that usual form!  The girls were focused, and it showed in their warm ups all the way through the race! We have individual goals and big team goals that feel even more attainable after a good showing Saturday! As Coach Duba says it best, “we should be peaking mid season” and building up after that. It is basically mid-season and seeing a race like that excites both coaches on what is to come! So this week brings one race on Saturday, the Fruitport Invitational. This course is fresh in our minds. We just ran our first conference race there. There should be no reason why we all can’t improve our times from the last one there! A full week of practice, with only one race, a familiar course coming up, off the heels of a great Saturday, feels like a recipe for success!  What the rest of the season looks like is each practice is important, not only for keeping our fitness up, but staying healthy! We can have meets like we did on Saturday every time, if we don’t underestimate our workout days, easy days, stretching, and other core and racing routines. It is all significant to our success as a runner! It requires us to remain focused and never lose sight of what we set out to do at the beginning of the season! But we’ll celebrate our team’s great work and hope to keep it going!

Another year brings another warm and hilly race at the St. Francis Retreat Center for the Michigan Catholic XC Invitational! Our girls varsity was led off by senior captain Lainey Roth. She ran a 22:28 and took advantage of the packs she was in to not slow down! Also for senior captains, Nathalie Strockis was 2nd position for the varsity with a 23:12! Abby Druelle followed with a 24:14 and a great finish! Also joining the varsity were Audrey Mckeiver and Bree Hoffer who kept focus the whole time and ran hard fought races! Claire Smith faced some adversity, but didn’t let it get in the way of finishing her race hard!  Following the girls race was the 2 mile race where we had three girls compete! It was an awesome race for them as each of the three Liz Richmond (2nd place), Paige Clinger (3rd place), and Katherine Klooster (4th place) received top place medals! Nice work girls! We’ll have a lot of good training until the Ottawa Hills Invitational on Friday September 16th. That is the race where the training wheels are off and everyone runs a 5k! The girls are a resilient group and even fighting through some things early will not deter us at all the rest of the way. We’ll continue to work on those basic fundamentals of the sport, keep improving our pacing, while fine tuning the elements of starting and finishing a race. We have a tight group of kids that will push each other to help reach their goals! Can’t wait to see how it takes shape!
